Mission

Develop and nurture future leaders in the art of the moving image through the unique combination of an experienced core faculty, a hands-on curriculum, and an internship placement program, thereby fully preparing the NFI student for a career in moving image production and its growing economic, social and political impact on the world's societies.

Provide the State of Idaho with a qualified and fully prepared work force in the field of the moving image.

Vision

Unlike more traditional liberal arts programs, NFI will rely on hands-on collaboration as its primary teaching tool, thereby mirroring the professional filmmaking environment. Students will be exposed to actual film making experiences taught by dedicated and experienced film makers from the feature, television and commercial fields. Upon completion of a two-semester annual course, students will have the option of being placed in a one-year internship with a commercial production company.

Our research shows that this distinctive approach will fill a void in the current offerings of similar institutions, and give NFI a competitive advantage.

Core Faculty

While the majority of other institutions' film educators are made up of book-theory instructors with little or no actual industry experience, the core NFI faculty will be made up of film industry professionals with extensive careers and credits, recruited from major guilds and unions within the motion picture industry.

Curriculum

At the Core of the NFI curriculum is the "learn by doing" philosophy. NFI students will be immersed in all aspects of film production under the guidance of industry professionals and will be required and expected to produce completed films. NFI will endeavor to introduce the student to the rigorous work schedule that most films encounter. Therefore, a forty-hour school week will be maintained with the majority of those hours involving the student in hands-on experience in the film making process.

NFI will offer instruction in producing, directing, cinematography, screenwriting, editing, and production design, through a two-year course. The first year will be spent on campus, developing and producing the students' own productions from screenplay to finished product. The second year will be spent in an internship with a commercial production company at the student's option.

Internship Placement

NFI will offer graduates placement in intern positions with actual working productions. This will allow NFI graduates to immediately apply their training, and further their experience while working alongside industry professionals on the sets of commercial productions. By meeting and working with professionals, the NFI graduate will be afforded a distinct advantage over the graduates of the majority of similar institutions, and thus be well positioned to garner future employment in the industry.
